Community Mural helps beautify Detroit Neighborhood

8/4/2016

For the last few months I've been volunteering with Life Remodeled to help beautify the Denby Neighborhood of Detroit.  I worked community members and Life Remodeled staff to identify a location for the mural, and then came up with a design to fill the space.  Yesterday, we completed the project and I'm so happy to say it was a huge success.  This 100'x5' mural at Heilmann Recreation Center was created through the hard work of so many volunteers!!! I am grateful for the amazing help from some hardworking teens who volunteered alongside me to make this project happen. Thanks to Kush Paint Co. for donating the paint, and to Life Remodeled for organizing the event.

The Power of Intention, Fused with the Beauty of Art

2/21/2015

Hello! I'm Shadia, an artist based in Metro Detroit.  To learn more about me, you can read my bio. I am developing an art project for this year's upcoming ArtPrize, a city-wide art event hosted in Grand Rapids, MI.

What is an "Intention"?

I like this quote from Deepak Chopra

"An intention is a directed impulse of consciousness that contains the seed form of that which you aim to create. Like real seeds, intentions can’t grow if you hold on to them. Only when you release your intentions into the fertile depths of your consciousness can they grow and flourish."

The Project:

  1. I intend collect thousands of hand-written intentions over the next 6 months
  2. I will then hand paint, stamp, stencil and otherwise decorate these papers filled with these positive intentions
  3. These papers will be hand torn and then reassembled to create a large scale collaged artwork that harnesses the collective power of these individual intentions to create a visual groundwork from which these collective intentions or 'seeds' can grow into a powerful force for positive change in the world.   This piece of art will have the opportunity to be seen by 400,000 + visitors over the course of approximately 3 weeks during this Fall's ArtPrize.
Picture
This is a detail from one of my collage pieces.  As you can see, within this 2"x1.5" detail (approximate), there are approximately 17 small pieces of paper.  As the papers are torn and reassembled, each individual intention is not fully revealed.  In this way, anonymity is retained and individual intentions are not fully revealed.  Below is an example of one of my collaged paintings.  "Bright Skies for Dark Days II", 12"x24"

YOU CAN BE A PART OF UNIQUE ART EVENT - VERY EASILY!

  • Send me an email with your mailing address and the word "Intention" in the subject.
  • I will send you a sampling of collage-appropriate papers.  Have your friends, family and children  fill up the papers with there positive intentions for the world, themselves, each other - the options are not limited and need only come from the heart.  If you are able, leveraging your friends in yoga, church and school may be a great idea.
  • When the papers are complete, simply mail them back in the pre-addressed and stamped envelope provided with your papers.  You and your intentions will become a piece of ART!
  • When I receive the completed papers, as a deep thank you for your time and participation, I will send you a free gift.  So please, email me today!

ALTERNATE OPTION:  If you prefer to not to fill papers of intention, you may submit a single positive intention directly to me via email or text at 734.634.0003.  I will incorporate these as well!

Please comment below- what do you think of this idea?  What would you like the finished painting to portray?  Do you have any suggestions to make it better?  Thank you for participating!

Three Poppies

This past week I traveled to Traverse City with 3 of my artist friends and colleagues.  Months ago, we signed up for a 4 day workshop through the Traverse City Art Center.  The workshop was to cover collage, and while was admittedly less than interested in collage as an ‘art form’, I was very excited to spend the week creating with my friends, far, far  away from the ladders and scaffold and house paint that usually fill my muralist/decorative painting work-weeks.
I was immediately blown away by our instructor, Elizabth St. Hilaire Nelson’s talent, unique approach and the artistry with which she ‘paints’ with papers.  Each of the papers used are hand painted & patterned for use as virtual ‘brushstrokes’ on the painting’s surface.  I cannot say enough about how her approach thoroughly shifted the paradigm I held of collage.  For more information on her work and to find your opportunities to learn with this beautiful and talented master, I highly recommend you visit her site.  Trust me.  I used to hate collage.  But after 4 days learning from Elizabeth, I’m addicted.

The day after I came home, I pulled out this half-worked canvas (image, right).

It has been milling about my studio for months now…a stunning background in blues and purples.  The problem?  The texture of the surface was a far cry from what I needed to create the playful flowers I envisioned growing up from the rocky, iridescent purple ground.

I immediately set upon creating flowers with collage. The sturdiness and opacity of the paper would hold up against not only the deep tones of the existing background but also the heavy texture.

The finished piece “Three Poppies” symbolizes to me the time spent in Traverse City with my 3 beautiful friends, Michele, Helena and Carleen.  Each stands strong and beautiful against the gorgeous scenery of coastal sky, and while our backgrounds are in paint, we are grounded in a new love of paint, collage, and of one another.   The measures 18”x36” and is on stretched gallery wrapped canvas, (ready to hang).  The piece is $650, though I feel this piece, much like my time spent in Traverse, will be hard  to let go.

Before I wrap up for the week, I want to share with you the 2 class projects I worked on while in Traverse City.  The first is an apple study.  Below you can see a detail of the collaged apple, the initial underpainting prior to collage and the finished piece.  “Apple Study” measures 11”x14”, and is awaiting a frame that I ordered last night :)
Picture
Lastly, the yet to be titled orchid painting below measures 12”x30”.   Again, you can see a detail of the collaged orchid, the initial underpainting prior to collage and the piece in progress.  I am debating whether to add painting to the surface.  I feel the piece lacks a linear element I have yet to develop in collage…. What are your thoughts?  Do you feel the piece stands alone as a collage, or would you like to see the surface?  Please share your opinions and thanks for reading!

Mother's Day at The Sunday Artisan Market

5/10/2014

Celebrate Mother's Day in the sun at the #TSAM - the Sunday Artisan Market of #annarbor. Shadia will be participating the in the Sunday Artisan Market in Ann Arbor, select Sundays for the 2014 season.  Visit the Art of Shadia Events page to stay updated as specific dates get added to the calendar.  During the market, Shadia will offer a selection of her smaller works and gift items.  Please stop by for a visit!

About the Market

The Sunday Artisan Market offers original, handmade work by as many as 60 artists and fine crafts persons in a full range of media from traditional to cutting edge.  All work is sold by the artists themselves, giving visitors the opportunity to learn about the creative processes and materials used. Some artists even work and give demonstrations while at the Market.

For many visitors, the Market is a Sunday destination, part of a full day’s entertainment within easy walking distance — breakfast at Braun Court restaurants, Sparrow Market gourmet grocery, specialty shopping at Kerrytown Shops, lunch at the well-known Zingerman’s Deli, afternoon jazz in the Kerrytown Concert House, dinner at Argiero’s Italian restaurant, and a stroll through the historic neighborhood.

The Artisan Market was founded in 1991 by a collective of artisans who envisioned an affordable, accessible venue in which to sell their work and to learn the business of “doing art” in community with other artists. This original idea continues to grow and expand with the support of the greater Ann Arbor community and its committment to the development of public and private art.  The Market actively recruits artists, food and service vendors, and family-friendly entertainment.
