"Garden of Intention" was created as an experiment in harnessing the collective power of intention within a work of art. It contains hundreds of hand-written submissions from around the state.
I began by distributing collage papers to children, friends, fellow artists, and teachers. They were invited to share their positive intentions for a better world. I then painted, stamped, stenciled and otherwise embellished these papers. They were hand torn and reassembled to create a collaged painting comprised of nearly 1,000 pieces of paper, many of them filled with these submissions.
My goal for this piece was to create a visual groundwork from which these written intentions could grow into a powerful force for positive change in the world. My hope is that everyone who sees this piece will be inspired to consider their own positive intentions. I know that while integrating these heartfelt, honest, and sometimes playful submissions into my painting, I was profoundly moved and filled with joy. This painting was part of ArtPrize7, a city wide art competition in Grand Rapids, MI
